These lines are characterized by a lighter color compared to the surrounding soil matrix, often appearing as distinct bands or streaks. The phenomenon is primarily associated with areas exhibiting significant moisture fluctuations and the presence of iron compounds.

The formation of valkaisulinjat is generally attributed to redox (reduction-oxidation) processes. In soils with alternating periods of waterlogging and drying, iron compounds can be mobilized and redistributed. During waterlogged, or reduced, conditions, iron can dissolve and move within the soil profile. When the soil dries out, or becomes oxidized, the iron can precipitate out, often forming iron oxides or hydroxides. The lighter color of the valkaisulinjat is typically due to the removal of these iron compounds from the soil matrix, leaving behind lighter-colored minerals like quartz or kaolinite.

These lines can vary in thickness, continuity, and spacing, depending on the specific soil type, drainage conditions, and the intensity of the redox cycling. They are often observed in gley soils or soils with hydromorphic properties, where water saturation is a common occurrence.
