valitud

Valitud is an Estonian adjective and past passive participle meaning “chosen” or “elected.” It is formed from the verb valima, “to choose,” with the participial suffix -tud, producing valitud to describe someone or something that has been selected. As an adjective, valitud agrees with its noun in case and number, and it can also function predicatively, as in Ta on valitud, meaning “He/She is elected.”

In everyday and political usage, valitud is most commonly applied to people who have been elected to an office or position, such as valitud esindajad (elected representatives) or valitud ametnik (elected official). It can also describe objects or materials that have been singled out or selected for a specific purpose, for example valitud materjal (selected material) or valitud koht (a chosen or designated place). The term is frequently encountered in discussions of elections, governance, and representation, but it also appears in general contexts where selection or designation is involved.

Valitud contrasts with forms indicating non-selection or selection processes still in progress. It is used both attributively (before a noun) and predicatively (with be-constructs like on). The word is part of a broader Swedification in some contexts, but remains clearly Estonian in usage and meaning, maintaining a neutral tone suitable for encyclopedic description.
