The basic principle involves transmitting light through a specimen, which is then magnified by an objective lens and further enlarged by an eyepiece lens. There are several types of light microscopes, each with specific applications. The most common is the bright-field microscope, where the specimen appears dark against a bright background. The resolution of light microscopes is limited by the wavelength of light used, typically around 200 nanometers, which restricts the ability to observe structures smaller than this limit, such as viruses or individual molecules.
