Vakuumtålighet, also known as vacuum compatibility, refers to the ability of a material or component to withstand the conditions of a vacuum without degrading or malfunctioning. This is a critical consideration in many scientific and industrial applications where a vacuum environment is present.

Materials that are vacuum-compatible generally exhibit low outgassing rates, meaning they release minimal amounts of trapped gases when exposed to a vacuum. High outgassing can contaminate the vacuum, interfere with sensitive experiments, or affect the performance of vacuum-dependent equipment. Common vacuum-incompatible materials include many plastics and organic compounds that readily release volatile molecules.

In addition to outgassing, vakuumtålighet also encompasses a material's physical integrity under vacuum conditions. Some materials might deform, crack, or otherwise change their properties due to the absence of external atmospheric pressure. For instance, certain elastomers can become brittle or swell in a vacuum.

The degree of vakuumtålighet required varies depending on the specific application. Ultra-high vacuum (UHV) environments, for example, demand materials with extremely low outgassing and high chemical stability. Standard vacuum applications might tolerate materials with slightly higher outgassing rates.

Typical materials considered to have good vakuumtålighet include stainless steel, glass, ceramics, and certain specialized polymers like PEEK and PTFE. When selecting materials for vacuum systems, engineers and scientists carefully consider their outgassing characteristics, thermal stability, and mechanical properties to ensure reliable operation and to maintain the integrity of the vacuum environment.
