A vakuumpåse, often translated as vacuum bag or vacuum seal bag, is a type of flexible packaging designed to remove air from the space between the contents and the bag itself. This is typically achieved using a vacuum sealer machine, which creates a seal by heating and melting the plastic edges of the bag, preventing air from re-entering.

The primary purpose of a vakuumpåse is to extend the shelf life of food products. By removing oxygen, it significantly slows down the processes of oxidation, spoilage, and the growth of aerobic bacteria and mold. This preservation method is particularly effective for meats, cheeses, vegetables, and grains, helping to maintain their freshness, flavor, and nutritional value for longer periods compared to traditional storage methods.

Beyond food preservation, vakuumpåsar have other practical applications. They can be used for non-food items, such as clothing or linens, to compress them and save storage space, especially for seasonal items. In some cases, they are also employed in sous vide cooking, where food is sealed in a vakuumpåse and then cooked in a precisely temperature-controlled water bath. The lack of air contact ensures even cooking and prevents the loss of moisture and flavor. The material of the vakuumpåse is usually a multi-layer plastic, often a combination of polyethylene and nylon, chosen for its durability, impermeability to gases, and heat-sealability.
