Vakionopeudensäädin, often referred to as cruise control, is a system that automatically controls the speed of a vehicle. It allows the driver to set a desired speed, and the system will then maintain that speed without the driver needing to keep their foot on the accelerator pedal. This functionality is particularly useful for long-distance driving on highways, as it can reduce driver fatigue and contribute to fuel efficiency by maintaining a more consistent speed.

The system typically works by electronically controlling the engine's throttle. When the driver activates the cruise control and sets a speed, sensors monitor the vehicle's actual speed. If the speed drops below the set point, such as when going uphill, the cruise control system will increase the throttle opening. Conversely, if the speed exceeds the set point, such as when going downhill, the system will reduce the throttle opening. Modern versions may also use the vehicle's brakes to help maintain the set speed, especially on steeper descents.

To disengage the cruise control, the driver can usually press a button on the steering wheel, gently apply the brakes, or depress the clutch pedal. Some systems also allow for temporary acceleration by pushing the accelerator pedal further, with the cruise control resuming the set speed once the pedal is released. Advanced versions, known as adaptive cruise control, can also adjust the set speed based on the distance to the vehicle in front, automatically slowing down and speeding up to maintain a safe following distance.
