A phased array radar is a type of radar system that uses a phased array antenna to electronically steer the radar beam. Instead of mechanically rotating a dish antenna, a phased array antenna consists of a large number of small, individual antenna elements. Each element can be individually controlled to adjust the phase of the signal it transmits or receives. By precisely controlling the phase of the signals from all the elements, the antenna can form a narrow, focused beam and steer it in any direction within the antenna's coverage area without any physical movement.

This electronic beam steering offers significant advantages over traditional mechanically steered antennas. Phased array radars can switch between different targets or search patterns very rapidly, allowing them to track multiple objects simultaneously with high accuracy. They are also more reliable as there are no moving parts to wear out. The ability to form multiple beams or change beam characteristics dynamically makes them highly versatile for a range of applications.

The fundamental principle relies on constructive and destructive interference of electromagnetic waves. By altering the phase of the signal emitted by each element, the waves combine in a specific direction to form a strong beam, while in other directions, they cancel each other out. The same principle applies to receiving signals.

Phased array radar technology is employed in various fields, including military applications for fighter jets and missile defense systems, air traffic control, weather forecasting, and increasingly in civilian applications like automotive radar for advanced driver-assistance systems and in some high-performance consumer electronics. The complexity of the control electronics and the cost of manufacturing have historically limited their widespread adoption, but advancements in technology are making them more accessible.
