Vahejahutust, also known as intercooling, is a process used in forced induction internal combustion engines to improve performance and efficiency. In engines equipped with a turbocharger or supercharger, the compression of intake air generates significant heat. This heated air is less dense, meaning less oxygen is packed into the cylinder, which can limit power output. Vahejahutust addresses this by cooling the compressed air before it enters the engine cylinders.

The intercooler typically works like a heat exchanger. After the turbocharger or supercharger compresses the air, it passes through the intercooler. Here, it comes into contact with a cooler medium, usually ambient air or a liquid coolant. This cooling process reduces the temperature of the intake charge. Cooler air is denser, allowing more oxygen to be drawn into the combustion chamber. This increased oxygen content enables the engine to burn more fuel, resulting in greater power and torque.

Beyond performance gains, vahejahutust also offers benefits in terms of engine longevity and fuel economy.
