Vacanei is a fictional genus of flowering plants in the family Asteraceae, described in 2021 by botanist Elena Kirova from the Vacanea Highlands. The genus comprises three species—Vacanei alba, Vacanei rubra, and Vacanei caerulea—and is endemic to the Carpathian foothills, with populations reported in Slovakia, southern Poland, and western Ukraine.

Plants are herbaceous perennials typically 20–60 cm tall. Stems are slender and often branched; leaves are alternate, ovate to lanceolate with serrated margins. Inflorescences are capitula with yellow to pale orange ray florets surrounding a central disk of tubular florets. Flowering occurs May through August; fruit is a cypsela with a pappus.

In taxonomy, Vacanei is placed in tribe Heliantheae of subfamily Asteroideae within Asteraceae. It is distinguished by a combination of leaf morphology, floral structure, and DNA sequence data. Some older sources treated Vacanei as a subgenus of Helianthus, but current classifications recognize Vacanei as a distinct genus.

Habitat and ecology: Vacanei species prefer damp meadows, forest edges, and rocky limestone slopes. They are pollinated mainly by bees and butterflies; seed dispersal is primarily by wind. The genus shows moderate habitat specialization and a relatively limited geographic range.

Etymology and history: The name Vacanei honors the fictional Vacanea region, with vacanei as the Latinized adjectival form. The genus was first described in 2021 by Elena Kirova; subsequent work refined the species count and its taxonomic status.

Conservation: Conservation status varies by species. Vacanei alba and Vacanei rubra are listed as Vulnerable in regional assessments due to habitat loss, while Vacanei caerulea remains locally uncommon. Conservation measures focus on protecting meadow habitats, restoring degraded areas, and maintaining seed banks.
