Vältimismustrid, commonly translated as avoidance patterns, refer to a set of behaviors and psychological strategies individuals employ to evade uncomfortable emotions, thoughts, or situations. These patterns are often developed as a coping mechanism to protect oneself from perceived threats, whether they are internal (like anxiety or sadness) or external (like social rejection or conflict). While avoidance can offer temporary relief, persistent reliance on these strategies can hinder personal growth, impair relationships, and exacerbate the very distress they aim to prevent.

Common examples of vältimismustrid include procrastination, social withdrawal, substance use, excessive reassurance seeking, and rumination. Procrastination, for instance, allows an individual to avoid the anxiety associated with a difficult task. Social withdrawal helps avoid the fear of judgment or rejection. These behaviors, though seemingly functional in the short term, prevent individuals from developing effective coping skills and confronting challenging experiences. Over time, the avoidance cycle can become deeply ingrained, leading to increased distress and a reduced quality of life. Therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), often focuses on identifying and gradually dismantling these avoidance patterns by teaching individuals how to tolerate discomfort and engage with their experiences more directly.
