Vähähappisuus, also known as hypoxia or oxygen deficiency, refers to a condition where the body, or a part of the body, is deprived of adequate oxygen supply. This can occur due to various reasons, affecting cells, tissues, or organs.

Common causes of vähähappisuus include impaired breathing, such as in cases of drowning, choking, or severe asthma. Lung diseases like pneumonia or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) can also lead to insufficient oxygen exchange. Cardiovascular issues, such as heart attack or heart failure, can reduce the blood's ability to transport oxygen effectively. Additionally, exposure to high altitudes, carbon monoxide poisoning, and certain medical conditions like anemia can contribute to vähähappisuus.

Symptoms vary depending on the severity and location of the oxygen deprivation. Mild cases might manifest as shortness of breath, dizziness, confusion, or a bluish discoloration of the skin and lips (cyanosis). More severe vähähappisuus can lead to loss of consciousness, seizures, organ damage, and even death if not promptly addressed.

Diagnosis typically involves assessing oxygen levels in the blood through pulse oximetry or arterial blood gas tests. Medical history and physical examination also play crucial roles.
