Upptagsgödsling, also known as foliar fertilization, is a method of plant nutrition where a liquid fertilizer solution is applied directly to the leaves of a plant. This bypasses the root system, allowing for rapid absorption of nutrients. The nutrients are absorbed through the stomata, which are small pores on the leaf surface.

This technique is particularly useful for correcting nutrient deficiencies quickly. When a plant shows signs of a shortage of a specific nutrient, foliar application can provide immediate relief, as the nutrients are directly available for uptake. It is also effective in situations where root uptake is impaired, such as in cold or waterlogged soils, or when the soil pH is unfavorable for nutrient absorption.

Commonly applied nutrients through upptagsgödsling include nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and micronutrients like iron, zinc, and manganese. The concentration of the fertilizer solution is crucial; too high a concentration can damage the leaves, while too low a concentration may not provide sufficient benefits. The timing of application, environmental conditions like humidity and temperature, and the stage of plant growth also influence the effectiveness of upptagsgödsling.

While beneficial for quick correction of deficiencies and overcoming soil limitations, foliar fertilization is generally not a complete substitute for soil fertilization. It is often used as a supplement to a regular soil-based nutrient program to optimize plant health and yield.
