Unstaking is the process of removing tokens that were previously staked in a proof-of-stake network or staking service, returning them to a liquid state that can be transferred, traded, or re-staked. Staking involves committing tokens to support network security, validation, or governance, often earning rewards in return. Unstaking the funds ends or reduces those staking activities and their associated rewards.

In most networks, unstaking requires a formal action, such as submitting an unstake request or exiting a validator. A common feature is an unbonding or withdrawal period, during which the tokens remain effectively locked or pending and may not earn rewards. After the cooldown concludes, the assets become transferable again and can be used in other ways, including re-staking.

In some systems, unstaking before a specific window or during certain conditions can result in reduced rewards or additional fees. Liquidity considerations also matter: certain mechanisms involve delays, liquidity mining timing, or bridging steps to access liquid funds.
