Unbonding is the process of removing a bond that has been formed between two or more entities, resulting in separation or transfer of the bonded components. It can occur in several contexts, each with its own mechanisms and implications.

In chemistry and materials science, unbonding describes the breaking of chemical bonds. Bonds are cleaved when energy is supplied, via heat, light, electric current, or mechanical force. The likelihood of bond cleavage is governed by bond dissociation energies and reaction kinetics; some bond breaking is irreversible, while in other systems bonds can reform to create different structures. Unbonding can lead to phase changes, reactivity, and the formation of radicals or ions, and is foundational to processes such as thermal decomposition, photolysis, and hydrolysis.

In blockchain and distributed ledger systems that use staking, unbonding refers to the withdrawal of funds that were previously bonded or staked to participate in consensus or network security. The unbonding process is typically initiated by the stakeholder and is followed by a waiting period during which the tokens remain locked and cannot be spent. After the unbonding period ends, the tokens become liquid and can be transferred or re-staked elsewhere. The duration of this period varies by protocol and is designed to deter frivolous withdrawals and protect network security. Unbonding also entails opportunity costs and, in some networks, may expose stakers to price and governance risks.
