Undervattensakustik, or underwater acoustics, is the scientific study of sound in the ocean. It encompasses the generation, propagation, reception, and analysis of sound waves within the marine environment. Sound travels much more effectively in water than in air, making acoustics a primary tool for exploring and interacting with the underwater world.

The field has numerous applications. Sonar, an acronym for Sound Navigation and Ranging, is a key technology derived from underwater acoustics. It is used for navigation, detecting objects, mapping the seafloor, and studying marine life. Militaries employ sonar for submarine detection and mine countermeasures. Oceanographers use it to study underwater topography, measure currents, and understand seismic activity. Biologists utilize acoustic methods to track marine mammals like whales and dolphins, assess fish populations, and study the acoustic behavior of various species.

The propagation of sound in water is influenced by factors such as temperature, salinity, and pressure, which create variations in sound speed. These variations can lead to phenomena like refraction and the creation of sound channels. The ocean is also a noisy environment, with natural sounds from marine life, waves, and weather, as well as anthropogenic noises from shipping, sonar, and offshore construction. Understanding and mitigating this noise pollution is an increasingly important aspect of underwater acoustics, particularly concerning its impact on marine ecosystems. Research in underwater acoustics continues to advance, leading to more sophisticated sensors, signal processing techniques, and a deeper understanding of the acoustic properties of the ocean.
