An underframe is the structural framework that forms the bottom portion of a vehicle or piece of equipment. It provides support for the body, carries the drivetrain and payload, and transmits loads to the wheels or tracks.

In road vehicles, the underframe may be a separate rigid frame (body-on-frame construction) or part of a unified shell (unibody) with subframes that mount the engine, suspension, and axles. The underframe is typically built from steel or aluminum, and may include cross-members, side members, and brackets to locate the body and components.

In rail and other wheeled transport, the underframe refers to the load-bearing skeleton beneath the car or wagon. It supports the body, houses equipment such as traction motors or braking systems, and provides mounting points for bogies or wheelsets. Rail underframes are usually steel or aluminum and frequently incorporate channels, girders, and bracing to resist bending and torsion.

Design considerations include strength, rigidity, weight, crash energy management, and ease of assembly or repair. Modular subframes can allow different body styles on a common platform; unibody designs integrate the underframe with the body to improve stiffness and safety, while body-on-frame designs emphasize durability and ease of repair.

Maintenance and inspection focus on corrosion, fatigue cracking, and connection integrity. Damaged underframes may require repair or replacement of sections, or complete frame replacement, depending on severity and regulatory requirements.
