Underdokumenter is a Norwegian term used in information management to describe documents that are part of a larger document or case file. They can be subdocuments, appendices, attachments, or annexes that belong to a parent document. Underdokumenter help organize long or complex information by dividing it into manageable components while preserving a unified structure and provenance.

In practice, underdokumenter exist as separate files linked to the main document or as embedded sections within a master document. They have their own metadata, such as author, date, version, and access permissions, and they may have independent revision histories. The relationship between a parent document and its underdokumenter is typically hierarchical: the parent provides context, while subdocuments supply detailed content.

Common use cases include legal case files with evidence lists and affidavits, project documentation with design specifications and test reports, technical manuals with appendices and datasets, and academic works with supplementary material. Management typically favors linking over duplicating content to minimize inconsistency; clear naming conventions, standardized metadata, and defined retention policies help governance and searchability.

Technically, underdokumenter can be stored as separate files in a document management system, or as nested components in formats that support master/subdocument relationships (for example, in some word processors or structured data formats). Challenges include ensuring version alignment, access control, and preventing orphaned subdocuments when a parent document is moved or deleted.
