Underbody refers to the underside of an object, most commonly a vehicle, and includes the structural elements and fittings located beneath the main body. In automotive use, the term covers floor pans, the chassis or frame, underbody belly pans, protective shields, and various systems that run along or beneath the vehicle such as the exhaust, fuel lines, brake lines, cooling ducts, and suspension components.

The underbody serves several functions. Aerodynamically, flat or contoured panels smooth the flow of air beneath the car, reducing drag and lift to improve efficiency and stability. It also protects vital components from road hazards, debris, and water, and it vents heat from the engine, transmission, and exhaust through shields and ducts. Additional purpose includes acoustics, shielding sensitive parts from noise and environmental exposure.

Common components include underbody shields or splash guards, engine and transmission skid plates, belly pans, exhaust shields, heat shields, and protective coatings. Materials vary by application and include steel and aluminum sheet, composite panels, and durable plastics; many vehicles receive an underbody coating to resist corrosion.

Design and maintenance: Underbody panels are typically installed during manufacturing and sometimes revised for aerodynamics or ground clearance. Aftermarket underbody protection is used for off-road or performance applications. Regular inspection for dents, corrosion, loose fasteners, and leaks is recommended, as is cleaning to remove salt and debris that accelerate wear.

In electrified vehicles, underbody design also addresses battery cooling and protection, while preserving structural integrity and aerodynamics.
