Umluftsystem refers to a system that recirculates air within a space rather than expelling it outdoors and introducing fresh air. This is commonly found in heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems within buildings, as well as in vehicles. The primary goal of an umluftsystem is to condition and redistribute existing air, often for energy efficiency reasons.

In HVAC applications, an umluftsystem typically draws air from a room, passes it through filters to remove dust and other particulates, and then reheats or recools it before returning it to the same space. This process reduces the energy required to heat or cool a building because it doesn't constantly have to condition a large volume of outside air, which may be at extreme temperatures. However, umluftsysteme can lead to a buildup of indoor pollutants if not properly maintained with regular filter changes and ventilation of other sources.

In vehicles, umluftsysteme are used to recirculate interior air, which can quickly warm up or cool down the cabin. This is particularly effective when the outside air is very hot or cold, as it prevents the HVAC system from working against the extreme external temperature. It can also help to prevent outside odors or exhaust fumes from entering the vehicle. Similar to building systems, prolonged use of umluft in cars can lead to stale air and increased humidity. Many modern systems offer a combination of umluft and Frischluft (fresh air) intake, allowing for user selection.
