Ultrasonically coupled is an adjective used to describe a connection between two systems that is mediated by ultrasonic energy. In engineering and sensing, it denotes a link where high-frequency mechanical vibrations are transferred or detected across an interface via an ultrasonic field, typically in the range from tens of kilohertz to several megahertz.

Mechanisms and interfaces: Coupling can occur through solid, liquid, or gel layers, or directly via an interface between materials with an ultrasonic transducer or horn. Efficiency depends on impedance matching, surface quality, and the properties of the coupling medium. Poor coupling leads to energy loss, reflections, and degraded performance, such as weaker welds or reduced signal strength.

Applications: Ultracoupled configurations appear in ultrasonic welding and bonding to join plastics and composites; medical ultrasound imaging and therapy require effective acoustic coupling with a conducting gel or fluid between the transducer and the patient; non-destructive testing relies on acoustic coupling to transmit and receive flaw signals; ultrasonic power transfer and wireless communication in compact systems can also use ultrasonic coupling to mediate energy or information between components; in micro- and nano-scale devices, ultrasonically coupled interfaces enable energy transduction and sensing.

Design considerations and limitations: Effective ultrasonically coupled systems demand careful impedance matching, stable coupling media, precise alignment, and control of interface conditions. Limitations include sensitivity to material heterogeneity, attenuation in the medium, and practical constraints on operating frequency and geometry.
