Ultrasensitive is an adjective used to describe a level of sensitivity that far exceeds standard thresholds in a given domain. In general, something ultrasensitive can detect or respond to very small amounts of a stimulus, signal, or substance, and often achieves a low detection limit or a high signal-to-noise ratio relative to conventional counterparts. The term is widely used across engineering, chemistry, biology, and environmental monitoring, but it is not governed by a single standardized definition. Different fields quantify sensitivity through metrics such as limit of detection, limit of quantitation, dynamic range, or response time, and what counts as "ultrasensitive" varies accordingly.

In analytical science and biosensing, ultrasensitive methods enable early or trace detection of biomarkers, pathogens, or pollutants. Examples include ultrasensitive immunoassays, single-molecule detection platforms, digital PCR, and other technologies with capabilities to measure femto- to attomolar concentrations or to count individual molecules. In electronics and photonics, ultrasensitive detectors and amplifiers aim to respond to exceedingly weak optical or electrical signals, improving performance in low-light conditions or subtle signal environments.

Because the term is often used in marketing as well as in technical description, claims of ultrasensitivity should be evaluated by independent performance data and context. High sensitivity can come with trade-offs such as increased susceptibility to interference, greater cost, or more stringent sample preparation requirements.
