Udtømningen (the draining) is the process of removing water from land that is waterlogged, marshy, or prone to flooding in order to create usable land for agriculture, settlements, or infrastructure. It is a form of land reclamation and has played a significant role in agricultural modernization and hydrological management in many northern European regions.

The technical approach typically involves constructing drainage systems that move water away from the land. This can include open ditches for surface drainage, tile drainage or underground pipes to remove water from the soil, and pumping stations or sluices to control water levels in wetter areas. Maintenance of drains, embankments, and pumping infrastructure is essential to keep land dry and productive. Drainage works are often integrated with land consolidation, flood protection, and irrigation planning.

Historically, udtømningen expanded in several regions from the early modern period onward, with large-scale efforts in the 18th through 20th centuries to convert wetlands and tidal areas into arable land and inhabited zones. The motivation typically combined increases in agricultural output, safety from flooding, and the creation of new settlement areas. The work altered local hydrology, lowered groundwater tables in some areas, and affected soil structure and ecosystems.

In contemporary practice, udtømningen is balanced with environmental considerations. There is attention to potential downsides such as subsidence, changes in biodiversity, and greenhouse gas emissions from peat soils. Modern management often includes restoration or rewetting in part of the drained lands to preserve habitats and ecosystem services, alongside ongoing drainage for productive land use.
