Udstødningsgastryk refers to the pressure exerted by the exhaust gases within an internal combustion engine's exhaust system. This pressure is a result of the combustion process, where hot gases expand and are forced out of the cylinders. The magnitude of this pressure is influenced by several factors, including engine load, engine speed, valve timing, and the design of the exhaust system itself.

During the exhaust stroke, the piston moves upwards, pushing the burnt gases through the exhaust valve. The resistance encountered by these gases as they travel through the exhaust manifold, catalytic converter, muffler, and tailpipe contributes to the overall exhaust gas pressure. A less restrictive exhaust system generally results in lower backpressure, which can improve engine efficiency and power output. Conversely, a highly restrictive system can impede exhaust flow, leading to increased backpressure and potentially reduced performance.

Monitoring exhaust gas pressure is important for diagnosing engine problems. Unusually high pressure can indicate a blockage in the exhaust system, such as a clogged catalytic converter or muffler. Low pressure might suggest exhaust leaks. In some performance applications, exhaust gas pressure is carefully managed to optimize scavenging effects, where the outgoing exhaust pulses help to draw more fresh air-fuel mixture into the cylinder. Understanding and controlling exhaust gas pressure is a key aspect of engine tuning and performance enhancement.
