Týkanie is a Czech and Slovak term referring to the informal mode of address used between individuals. It is the equivalent of the English "tu" or "you" (singular informal), contrasting with the formal "vykanie," which is the equivalent of "vous" or "you" (plural/formal). The choice between týkanie and vykanie is a significant social cue in both cultures, reflecting the relationship and perceived intimacy between speakers.

Generally, týkanie is reserved for close friends, family members, children, and sometimes colleagues in very informal work environments. It implies a level of familiarity and equality. Conversely, vykanie is used when addressing strangers, elders, superiors, or in more formal settings. It conveys respect and distance.

The transition from vykanie to týkanie is a gradual process and often involves explicit agreement. One person might suggest "Môžeme si tykať?" (Can we tú? / Can we be on first-name terms?). Once this agreement is reached, continuing to use vykanie would be considered impolite. Mastering the appropriate use of týkanie and vykanie is an important aspect of social etiquette in Czech and Slovak societies.
