Tütemezés is a Hungarian term that refers to the process of filling or lining a chimney flue, typically with a metal pipe or a specialized material. This practice is undertaken to improve the efficiency and safety of a chimney system. Older chimneys, particularly those constructed from brick or stone, can deteriorate over time, leading to cracks and leaks. These imperfections can allow smoke and harmful gases to escape into the living space, posing a fire hazard and health risks.

The primary goal of tütemezés is to create a smooth, airtight passageway for exhaust gases to travel from the appliance, such as a fireplace or stove, to the outside. This is often achieved by inserting a stainless steel or aluminum liner into the existing chimney structure. The liner is usually flexible and can be maneuvered through the bends and turns of the flue. In some cases, a cementitious material or a ceramic liner might be used, depending on the specific requirements of the chimney and the appliance it serves.

Tütemezés can also enhance the draft of the chimney, ensuring that smoke is efficiently drawn upwards and out of the building. A properly lined chimney is less susceptible to creosote buildup, a flammable substance that can accumulate on the interior surfaces and lead to chimney fires. It also helps to protect the structural integrity of the chimney by preventing corrosive elements in the exhaust gases from damaging the masonry.
