Geographical indications identify a product as originating in a specific geographical location, where a particular quality, reputation, or other characteristic of the product is essentially attributable to its geographical origin. Examples include Champagne for sparkling wine from the Champagne region of France.

The protection of industrial property rights is crucial for fostering economic growth, promoting technological advancement, and ensuring fair competition in the global marketplace. International treaties, such as the Paris Convention and the TRIPS Agreement, facilitate the protection of industrial property rights across different countries.
