Tööstusomand refers to the body of law that protects creations of the mind and industrial inventions. It grants exclusive rights to creators and inventors for a limited period, allowing them to benefit from their work and encourage further innovation. The main types of industrial property include patents, trademarks, industrial designs, and geographical indications.

Patents protect new inventions, such as processes, machines, manufactures, and compositions of matter. A patent gives the inventor the right to exclude others from making, using, or selling the invention for a specified period, usually 20 years from the filing date. This encourages inventors to disclose their inventions to the public in exchange for a temporary monopoly.

Trademarks protect brand names, logos, and other distinctive signs used to identify goods or services of a particular enterprise. They help consumers distinguish products and services in the marketplace and prevent confusion. Trademark protection can last indefinitely as long as the mark is in use and renewed.

Industrial designs protect the ornamental or aesthetic aspect of an article. This can include the shape, configuration, pattern, or ornamentation applied to a product. The protection typically lasts for 10 to 25 years, depending on the jurisdiction.

Geographical indications identify a product as originating in a specific geographical location, where a particular quality, reputation, or other characteristic of the product is essentially attributable to its geographical origin. Examples include Champagne for sparkling wine from the Champagne region of France.

The protection of industrial property rights is crucial for fostering economic growth, promoting technological advancement, and ensuring fair competition in the global marketplace. International treaties, such as the Paris Convention and the TRIPS Agreement, facilitate the protection of industrial property rights across different countries.
