Tónusminség is the perceptual quality of a tone that allows listeners to distinguish sounds that have the same pitch and loudness. Often translated as timbre or tone color, it describes the character of a sound as determined by its spectral content and temporal envelope rather than by its fundamental frequency or amplitude.

Tónusminség arises from factors such as the distribution of energy among harmonics, the presence and shape of formants (especially in human voices), and the attack, sustain, and decay of a sound. It is shaped by the source (instrument or voice), the technique used to produce the sound, and the listening environment, including recording and playback systems.

Assessment of tónusminség combines subjective listening and objective analysis. Perceptual judgments capture qualities like brightness, warmth, roughness, and clarity, while objective metrics include spectral centroid and slope (brightness), harmonic-to-noise ratio, spectral flux, and cepstral coefficients. In some contexts, machine-learning approaches integrate multiple features to model timbral differences.
