A tæthere is a fictional, ethereal being described in folklore and speculative fiction as a small, luminescent creature that inhabits the upper air and mist. The plural form is tætheres. The term is a coined word that combines an archaic ligature with the root ether, intended to evoke an airborne and ghostly presence. In most treatments, tætheres are considered part of the world's trace ether or atmospheric memory.

In appearance, a tæthere is typically 1–3 millimeters long, translucent and threadlike, with fine filaments and a softly glowing tip. They reproduce by budding or fragmentation in moist air and derive sustenance from trace atmospheric energy, mineral vapors, and chemical signatures carried by wind currents.

Observations link tætheres to highlands, misty valleys, cave mouths, and auroral skies. They are often described as migrating along magnetic anomalies and weather fronts, congregating near storms and heat currents. They’re noted for their sensitivity to light and air quality, retreating from bright illumination.

Groups of tætheres exhibit coordinated movement in swarms through harmonic or vibrational signaling, and individual beings may detach from swarms to explore microenvironments. Direct interaction with humans is generally avoided by the beings, and they tend to vanish when exposed to strong light.

In folklore, tætheres are omens of weather, guides for travelers, or guardians of thresholds between realms. In contemporary fiction and worldbuilding, they function as memory carriers or power sources, harvesting ambient energy to power devices or to store fleeting impressions. The concept has been used to explore themes of collective intelligence and the fragility of atmospheric ecosystems.
