Täiushimul, also known as *Estonia’s National Day* or *Independence Day*, is a significant public holiday celebrated annually on February 24th. The date commemorates the declaration of Estonia’s independence from Soviet rule in 1918, marking the establishment of the Republic of Estonia after centuries of foreign domination.

The origins of the holiday trace back to February 24, 1918, when the Estonian Council of Regents, led by Konstantin Päts, proclaimed Estonia’s sovereignty following the collapse of the Russian Empire during World War I. The declaration was met with resistance from Soviet forces, leading to the Estonian War of Independence (1918–1920), which ultimately secured Estonia’s freedom.

Täiushimul is celebrated with patriotic events across the country, including military parades, concerts, and official ceremonies. The capital city, Tallinn, hosts the largest festivities, featuring a grand parade along the Old Town’s Freedom Square. Citizens often display Estonian flags, and traditional folk performances, such as singing and dancing, are common.

The holiday also serves as a reminder of Estonia’s resilience and cultural identity. While the Soviet occupation (1940–1941 and 1944–1991) temporarily suppressed national celebrations, Täiushimul regained full significance after Estonia regained independence in 1991. Today, it remains a symbol of national pride and unity.
