Tähtvõrku, often translated as "star network" in English, is a type of computer network topology where individual devices are connected to a central hub or switch. This central point acts as a communication conduit for all data traffic. Each device in the network, such as a computer, printer, or server, has a dedicated point-to-point connection to this central hub. Data sent from one device to another must first pass through the hub.

The primary advantage of a star network is its simplicity and ease of management. If a single cable connecting a device to the hub fails, only that specific device is affected, and the rest of the network continues to function. This also makes it relatively easy to add or remove devices without disrupting the entire network. Troubleshooting is also simplified as problems can often be traced back to a specific device or its connection to the hub.

However, a significant disadvantage of the star network is its reliance on the central hub. If the hub fails, the entire network goes down. Additionally, the cost of cabling can be higher compared to other topologies like a bus network, as each device requires its own cable run to the center. The performance of a star network can also be limited by the capacity of the central hub; if too many devices are trying to communicate simultaneously, the hub can become a bottleneck. Despite these drawbacks, the star topology remains one of the most common and practical network designs, especially in modern Ethernet local area networks.
