Tähejärjestuste, a term of Estonian origin, refers to the perceived patterns of stars in the night sky. These arrangements are not inherent physical groupings but rather are a result of human interpretation and cultural storytelling. Throughout history, various civilizations have identified and named constellations, often imbuing them with mythological significance, historical events, or depictions of animals and objects. These interpretations served practical purposes, such as navigation and timekeeping, as well as cultural and religious functions.

The International Astronomical Union (IAU) officially recognizes 88 constellations, which divide the entire celestial sphere. While the traditional star patterns remain, the actual boundaries of these constellations are now precisely defined by the IAU for astronomical cataloging.
