Työterveyslaitos, known in English as the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health (FIOH), is a Finnish government agency dedicated to occupational health and safety. It conducts research, provides expert services, and develops guidelines to prevent work-related illness and to support people’s ability to work. The institute serves employers, workers, healthcare professionals, and government authorities, and collaborates with universities and other research organizations.

Key activities include epidemiological and applied research on work-related risks and diseases, development and dissemination of evidence-based practices, and support for the provision of occupational health services (OHS). It also offers training for OHS professionals and develops tools and guidance for risk assessment, rehabilitation, and health promotion in workplaces. The institute operates information resources and advisory services to help organizations improve health and safety.

Historically established in the mid-20th century as Finland’s national center for occupational health, Työterveyslaitos became part of the National Institute for Health and Welfare (THL) through Finland’s health and welfare reforms enacted around 2009–2010. Today it operates as a unit within THL, maintaining its occupational health focus while collaborating with regional authorities, employers, unions, and educational institutions. Its headquarters are in Helsinki, with regional units to work with workplaces across the country.

Funding comes from the state budget and other government resources, with governance by a board and executive management. THL coordinates its work to align with national health and safety policy and international occupational health standards.
