A työkalunvaihtaja, often translated as an automatic tool changer or ATC, is a crucial component in modern computer numerical control (CNC) machine tools. Its primary function is to automatically exchange the cutting tool held by the spindle of the machine. This automated process significantly increases efficiency and productivity by reducing manual intervention and downtime.

The operation of a työkalunvaihtaja typically involves a tool magazine, which stores a variety of tools. When a new tool is required for a machining operation, the ATC system signals the machine to stop. The existing tool is then retracted from the spindle and returned to its designated location in the magazine. Subsequently, the new tool is retrieved from the magazine and precisely inserted into the spindle. This entire sequence can happen in a matter of seconds.
