It refers to abstract, generalized models that sociologists construct to understand and analyze complex social phenomena. These are not statistical averages or empirical descriptions of reality, but rather conceptual tools that highlight certain characteristics of a social phenomenon.

Weber emphasized that tyyppikäsitteet are tools for analysis, not ends in themselves. They are constructed by the researcher to emphasize specific, often extreme or one-sided, aspects of a phenomenon to make it more comprehensible. For instance, a tyyppikäsitte of "bureaucracy" might accentuate hierarchical structure, formal rules, and impersonal relationships, even though no real-world bureaucracy perfectly embodies all these traits.
