typefounder
A typefounder is a craftsman or company that designs and produces metal type for printing. This process was central to the invention and widespread adoption of the printing press. Typefounders would cast individual letterforms, numbers, and punctuation marks out of a metal alloy, typically lead, tin, and antimony. These individual pieces of metal type, known as sorts, were then arranged by a typesetter to form words, lines, and pages of text. Once printing was complete, the type could be disassembled and reused.
The development of typefounding as a distinct trade occurred in the 15th century, coinciding with Johannes
