A letterform is the visible shape of a letter as designed in a typeface or handwritten script. In typography, letterforms are the individual shapes that convey letter identity, independent of their semantic meaning. A font or typeface provides a set of letterforms in a consistent style and size; a glyph is any single shape that represents a character, while the term letterform emphasizes the design of the shape itself.

Anatomy and features: baseline, x-height, cap height, ascenders, descenders; bowl, loop, ear, tail; stroke contrast; weight; serif or sans-serif terminals; and diacritical marks. The style of a letterform arises from contour and stroke modulation, influencing legibility and tone.
