Ascenders are the parts of certain lowercase letters that extend above the x-height. Letters such as b, d, f, h, k, l, and t have ascenders, while many letters remain within the x-height. Descenders are letters that extend below the baseline, such as g, j, p, q, and y.

Definition and measurements: The distance from the baseline to the top of an ascender is called the ascender height. In most Latin typefaces, the ascender height is near the cap height, but exact proportions vary with the design of the font.

Function and typographic effect: Ascenders contribute to the vertical texture of text and aid legibility by creating distinctive letter shapes. They influence the required line spacing (leading); fonts with long ascenders may need more space between lines to avoid crowding, while shorter ascenders can produce a denser appearance. In cursive or display type, ascenders can be stylized to produce a particular mood.

Variation and context: Different typefaces handle ascenders differently. Serif and sans-serif fonts may have similar ascender labels but with differing stroke contrast and width. Some fonts intentionally use longer ascenders for a more open feel; others use short ascenders for compact text. All-caps text typically has no ascenders because uppercase letters reach the cap height.
