The tynntarmsprøven, also known as a small intestine biopsy, is a diagnostic procedure used to examine the lining of the small intestine. This is typically performed during an upper endoscopy, also called esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD). During an EGD, a flexible tube with a camera attached is passed through the mouth, down the esophagus and stomach, and into the duodenum, the first part of the small intestine.

When the endoscope reaches the small intestine, the physician can visualize the intestinal lining. If any abnormalities are observed, such as inflammation, ulcers, or suspicious growths, tiny tissue samples can be collected using forceps passed through the endoscope. These tissue samples are then sent to a laboratory for microscopic examination by a pathologist.

The tynntarmsprøve is valuable for diagnosing various conditions affecting the small intestine. It is frequently used to identify celiac disease, an autoimmune disorder triggered by gluten that damages the intestinal villi. It can also help diagnose other malabsorption syndromes, inflammatory bowel diseases like Crohn's disease, infections, and certain types of tumors. The procedure itself is generally safe, with risks similar to those of a standard EGD.
