A tynntarmsprøve, also known as a small intestine biopsy, is a medical procedure where a sample of tissue is taken from the lining of the small intestine. This sample is then examined under a microscope by a pathologist. The primary purpose of a tynntarmsprøve is to help diagnose various conditions affecting the small intestine, such as celiac disease, Crohn's disease, infections, malabsorption syndromes, and certain types of tumors.

The procedure is typically performed during an upper endoscopy (esophagogastroduodenoscopy) or a capsule endoscopy. In an upper endoscopy, a flexible tube with a camera is passed down the throat into the esophagus, stomach, and the first part of the small intestine (duodenum). Small instruments can be passed through the endoscope to take tiny tissue samples. Capsule endoscopy involves swallowing a small camera pill that travels through the digestive tract, capturing images. If abnormalities are detected in these images, a follow-up upper endoscopy may be performed to obtain biopsies.

Before the procedure, patients are usually required to fast for several hours. Sedation is often administered to ensure comfort and relaxation. After the biopsy, most individuals can resume their normal activities relatively quickly, though some may experience mild bloating or discomfort. The results of the tynntarmsprøve provide crucial information for physicians to establish an accurate diagnosis and develop an appropriate treatment plan for the patient.
