Tympanisen is a term used in anatomy to refer to the tympanum, or tympanic membrane, and to related hearing organs across different animal groups. The word derives from Greek tympanon, meaning drum, and has been adopted into several Nordic-language scientific vocabularies with the definite form tympanisen.

In humans and other mammals, the tympanisen typically refers to the tympanic membrane, a thin, oval membrane at the boundary of the outer ear. It vibrates in response to sound waves and transmits mechanical energy to the middle ear bones—the malleus, incus, and stapes. This chain amplifies vibrations, which are then converted into neural signals by the inner ear. The tympanic membrane also contributes to protective reflexes that reduce exposure to loud sounds.
