Process: After washing, apply a leave-in conditioner and a styling product such as a gel, cream, or custard. Section the hair into evenly sized portions and create two-strand twists, or use variants like flat twists or rope twists. Allow the hair to dry completely, using air-drying or a hooded dryer. Gently unravel the twists, starting at the ends and working toward the roots, then separate curls with fingers. An optional light oil can be applied to seal moisture.

Variants: The most common form is the two-strand twist-out. Other options include flat twist-outs, rope twist-outs, and mini-twistouts. Twist size influences the final pattern: larger twists typically produce looser waves, while smaller twists yield tighter curls. Some stylists combine twistouts with teas or setting lotions for different hold and texture.

Care and maintenance: Protect the style at night with a satin or silk scarf or bonnet. Refresh with a light water-based spray and a small amount of leave-in conditioner to reduce frizz, then re-twist roots if needed. Avoid heavy products that can cause buildup and consider regular deep conditioning to maintain hair health.
