In fashion and media, a stylist translates a brief into a cohesive look for photoshoots, campaigns, editorials, or runway shows. They may work with designers, photographers, models, and clients. Hair stylists and makeup artists design and apply complementary beauty looks, while a personal or wardrobe stylist advises on everyday clothing, shopping, and closet management.

Typical duties include interpreting a concept or brief, researching trends, creating mood boards, sourcing garments and accessories (loaned or purchased), conducting fittings, coordinating tailoring, and managing budget and schedule. On set or location shoots, they adjust outfits for practicality, continuity, and lighting.

Education and training vary. Many stylists study fashion, design, or cosmetology, and build portfolios through internships, assistant work, or freelance assignments. Licensing is not universally required, but professional credentials and a strong portfolio help. Key skills include an eye for color and silhouette, communication, negotiation, organization, and teamwork.

Work environments range from fashion houses, magazines, and advertising agencies to film, television, and private clients. Stylists can be freelance consultants or employed by brands or agencies. The field has adapted to digital media, with increased emphasis on social media-ready looks and content creation.
