tvrenje

Tvrenje is a small settlement situated in the western part of Bosnia and Herzegovina, within the municipality of Kupres in Canton 6 of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The village lies in a valley surrounded by the Dinaric Alps, at an altitude of approximately 1,200 metres above sea level. According to the 2013 census, the population comprised 84 residents, primarily of Bosniak and Croat descent. The local economy is mainly based on subsistence agriculture, with small-scale livestock breeding and forestry activities common among the inhabitants.

Historically, Tvrenje has been a rural community with roots tracing back to the Ottoman period, when the area was part of the nahija of Kupres. The village saw significant demographic shifts during the 20th century, especially in the aftermath of the Bosnian War, when many families were displaced, and the local population decreased. In recent decades, local authorities have promoted small-scale tourism, leveraging the region's natural beauty and traditional mountain culture to attract visitors for hiking, cross‑country skiing, and cultural events.

The village falls under the jurisdiction of the Kupres municipality, which is responsible for local infrastructure, education, and cultural matters. Tvrenje remains a typical example of a high‑altitude, low‑density settlement characteristic of the western Bosnian highland region.
