Tuulensuojaja is a term used to describe a windbreak or wind shield—any barrier that reduces wind speed in a defined area. It can be natural or artificial and is employed to protect people, crops, livestock, buildings, and outdoor work from wind effects. Common forms include rows of trees or shrubs acting as a living windbreak, hedges, fences, walls, and perforated screens or other barriers.

Living windbreaks are typically planted perpendicular or obliquely to prevailing winds and are designed to be porous enough to allow some air to pass, which helps minimize turbulence on the leeward side.
