Universities award alemman korkeakoulututkinnon (Bachelor’s degree) and ylemmän korkeakoulututkinnon (Master’s degree), with further degrees such as licentiate or doctor in certain disciplines. Universities of applied sciences (AMK) issue AMK-tutkinto (Bachelor’s level) and YAMK or equivalent master’s degrees in applied sciences. The degrees are structured to combine theoretical study with practical skills and are typically completed through a combination of coursework, examinations, and thesis work. The awarding bodies are responsible for quality assurance, recognition, and alignment with national and international standards.

In vocational education and training, tutkinnot include ammatillinen perustutkinto (basic vocational qualification), ammattitutkinto (professional qualification), and erikoisammattitutkinto (specialized professional qualification). These qualifications are intended to certify practical competencies needed in specific trades or sectors. They are issued by education providers under national curricula, often incorporating work-based learning and demonstrations of skill. Assessments may include exams, portfolios, practical demonstrations, and on-the-job evaluation.

Recognition and mobility are supported by national education policy and European frameworks, facilitating transferability across institutions and countries.
