turvalasia

Turvalasia refers to glass that has been treated to be safer in the event of breakage. The primary goal of turvalasia is to reduce the risk of injury from sharp glass fragments. There are several types of turvalasia, each with distinct properties and applications.

One common type is karkaistu lasi, also known as tempered glass. This glass is heated to a high temperature and then rapidly cooled, creating internal stresses that make it much stronger than ordinary glass. When tempered glass does break, it shatters into small, relatively blunt pieces, minimizing the potential for serious cuts. Tempered glass is widely used in applications where safety is a concern, such as in car windows, shower doors, and tabletops.

Another form is laminoidi lasi, or laminated glass. This type of glass consists of two or more layers of glass bonded together with an interlayer, typically made of polyvinyl butyral (PVB). When laminated glass breaks, the fragments tend to adhere to the interlayer, holding the pane together and preventing it from shattering outwards. This makes laminated glass ideal for applications where security and protection from intrusion are important, such as in storefronts, skylights, and security glazing.

Wire mesh glass, where a wire mesh is embedded within the glass, is another category of turvalasia. The wire mesh helps to hold the glass together even when it cracks, providing a degree of fire resistance and impact protection. Turvalasia is crucial in numerous architectural and automotive designs to enhance safety and durability.
