Tungöljyä, also known as tung oil or China wood oil, is a natural drying oil derived from the seed of the tung tree. The tung tree, Aleurites fordii, is native to China, and its oil has been used for centuries as a wood finish. The oil is extracted through pressing the seeds, and its unique properties make it a popular choice for protecting and beautifying wood surfaces.

The primary characteristic of tungöljyä is its excellent waterproofing and durability. When applied to wood, it penetrates the grain and polymerizes, forming a hard, flexible, and water-resistant barrier. This makes it ideal for applications exposed to moisture, such as outdoor furniture, boat interiors, and kitchen countertops. Tungöljyä also imparts a rich, natural luster to wood, enhancing its grain and providing a warm tone.

Unlike some synthetic finishes, tungöljyä is a natural product with relatively low toxicity. However, it does contain linolenic acid, which can cause allergic reactions in some individuals. Proper ventilation is recommended during application, and it is important to allow sufficient drying time, as the curing process can take several days or even weeks depending on environmental conditions. It is often applied in multiple thin coats to achieve the best results.
