Tuhastamiseks refers to the process of cremation, a method of final disposition of a dead body or cremated remains. In this process, the body is reduced to its basic components through incineration. The remains are then typically placed in an urn or other suitable container. This practice has historical roots in many cultures and is a widely accepted alternative to burial in many parts of the world.

The cremation process usually takes place in a specialized facility called a crematorium. Inside, the body is placed in a combustible container, often a casket or a simple shroud, and then introduced into a cremation chamber. High temperatures, typically between 1,400 and 1,800 degrees Fahrenheit (760 to 980 degrees Celsius), are used to break down the organic matter. The process itself usually takes a few hours, depending on the size and composition of the body.

After cremation, the remaining bone fragments are cooled and then processed in a machine called a retort or cremulator. This reduces the bones into finer particles, commonly referred to as ashes. These ashes are then returned to the family or designated recipient. Families can choose to keep the ashes in an urn, scatter them in a meaningful location, or inter them in a cemetery. Cultural, religious, and personal beliefs often influence the decision to cremate and how the ashes are handled.
