Tryckhastigheten, often translated as pressure wave speed or propagation speed of pressure, refers to how quickly a change in pressure travels through a medium. This speed is a fundamental property of the medium itself and is distinct from the speed of the particles within the medium. When a disturbance, such as a sound wave or a shock wave, is generated, it creates a localized change in pressure. This pressure variation then propagates outwards, affecting adjacent parts of the medium.

The tryckhastigheten is determined by the medium's elasticity and its density. More elastic materials generally allow pressure changes to propagate faster, as they return to their original shape more readily after being deformed. Conversely, denser materials tend to slow down the propagation of pressure waves because more mass needs to be moved for the disturbance to travel. For example, sound travels faster in solids than in liquids, and faster in liquids than in gases, reflecting differences in their elastic and density characteristics. In gases, tryckhastigheten is closely related to the speed of sound.
